라리타(제시카 비엘)는 몬테 카를로에서 영국인 존 휘테커(벤 반스)와 충동적으로 결혼한 뒤, 신랑의 가족을 만나기 위해 영국으로 간다. 당연히 존의 가족은 라리타를 탐탁치 않게 여기는데, 특히 존의 어머니(크리스틴 스콧 토마스), 두 여동생 힐다와 마리온은 신혼부부의 사이를 갈라놓아 라리타를 쫓아내려고 안간힘을 쓴다. 그러나 휘태커 씨(콜린 퍼스)만은 유일하게 라리타를 감싸주고 함께 유대를 맺어가는데...
상류사회의 표리부동함과 모순을 꼬집는 코미디. 1928년 알프레드 히치콕 감독에 의해 영화화 된 적이 있음.
