프레디는 북부 프랑스의 작은 마을에서 엄마와 산다. 그와 그의 친구들은 오토바이를 타고 마을 가로질러 쏜살같이 지나가거나 여기저기를 배회하며 시간을 보낸다. 20살이 되도록 취직도 않고 말도 거의 하지 않으며 할 일도 없다. 그들의 무료함은 아랍계 소년이 프레디의 여자 친구에게 접근하기 시작하면서 비극으로 돌변한다.
