20년전, 멕시코에서 한 젊은 남자가 30명의 여자를 살해한 후 시체를 정원에 파묻어 버린 엽기적인 사건이 일어났다. 당시 범인은 정신병원에 입원했지만 현재 그는 퇴원하여 소설가로 활동 중이다. 조도로프스키는 이 인물을 직접 만나 살인을 하게 된 경위등을 상세하게 인터뷰한 후 경찰을 통해 그의 진술이 모두 진실임을 확인하는 작업을 마쳤다. 그로부터 6년의 세월이 지나서야 <성스러운 피>의 시나리오를 완성한 것이다. 감독 자신이 ’처음으로 관객을 위해 제작했다’고 말하는 <성스러운 피>는 89년 깐느영화제에서 최초 소개되었다.
