1918 년 프랑스에서 제 1 차 세계 대전 마지막 달 동안 4 명의 보병, 즉 바이에른 (Fritz Kampers), ’한스’(Hans-Joachim Moebis), 칼 (Gustav Diessl), 중위 ( Claus Clausen)은 후방에서 며칠 휴식을 취하게 된다. 이런 가운데 한스는 프랑스 농부 이베트 (Jackie Monnier)와 사랑에 빠진다. 다시 전방참호로 돌아간 네 사람은 참호가 무너지고 갇히게 되는데...,
