뉴욕에서 학생들에게 작문을 가르치는 프래니. 그녀는 흑인 속어집을 만들기 위해 외설적이고 적나라한 언어를 수집하고 있다. 그러던 중 이웃집 여자가 살해되는 사건이 발생하고 형사 말로이가 수사를 위해 그녀를 찾아온다. 마초적인 말로이 형사에게 자신도 모르게 성적 매력을 느끼는 프래니. 이후 그녀의 주변에서 연쇄 살인사건이 잇달아 발생하고 그녀는 혼란과 두려움에 빠진다.
