사막과 초원의 경계, 그 끝에서 만난 한 포기 희망몽골과 중국의 변경 사막지대에 있는 작은 마을. 그 곳 사람들은 계속되는 사막화로 하나 둘 마을을 떠난다. 뽈나무 묘목을 심으며 사막화와 싸워나가던 항가이는 땅을 지켜내겠다는 신념 하나만으로 버텨내지만, 아내와 딸조차 울란바토르로 향하고 외로운 나날을 보내고 있다. 그러던 어느 날, 탈북자 최순희와 그녀의 아들 창호가 그의 집에 머무르게 되고, 단 한마디의 말도 통하지 않는 그들에게도 평화로운 시간들이 찾아오는데….
