젊은 과학자 빅터 프랑켄슈타인 박사는 생명의 비밀을 알아내고 인간의 형상을 닮은 피조물을 만드는 데 성공한다. 피조물은 아이처럼 순수한 영혼을 가졌지만, 추악한 외모 탓에 어느 누구에게도 환영 받지 못하고 그를 만든 빅터에게조차 버림 받는다. 피조물은 자신의 외모를 저주하며 스스로 소외시키던 중 노인 드 라쎄를 만나 언어와 감정을 배우게 된다. 그러나 노인의 가족들은 그를 쫓아내고 절망한 피조물은 빅터를 찾아가 자신을 위한 완벽한 반려자를 만들어 달라고 부탁하는데…
