여덟살 배기 꼬마 몬초는 긴장한 탓에 첫 등교에서 오줌을 지린다. 그날 밤 집에 찾아와 위로해준 그레고리오 선생님이 아니었다면 몬초는 영영 미취학아동이 될 뻔했다. 몬초는 파브르 뺨치는 지식으로 곤충의 생태를 가르치고 온화한 눈빛으로 인간의 존엄을 설파하는 선생님을 믿고 따른다. 그러나 이곳은 전운이 감돌던 1936년 스페인의 작은 마을이다. 결국 끌려가는 공화주의자 선생님을 향해 아이들은 돌을 던진다. 과연 몬초의 선택은?
