중세 유럽, 아직 신앙과 마법이 공존하던 시대이탈리아 북부 아킬라스성을 지배하던 추기경은 청순한 미녀 이사보(미쉘 파이퍼)를 사랑하게 되나 그녀는 추기경의 경호대장 니바르(룻거 하우어)를 사랑하고 있었다. 이에 추기경은 두 사람을 늑대와 매가 되게 하여 서로 만날 수 없도록 만들어 버렸다. 사랑하는 사람과 말 한마디 나눌 수 없게 된 두 사람은 가스톤의 도움으로 추기경을 없애고 아킬라스 성에 평화를 되찾으려 하는데...
