시카고, 고등학교에 다니고 17세 소년 조엘 굿슨(Joel Goodson: 톰 크루즈 분)은 원하는 어느 대학에 들어가도 될만한 머리를 가지고 있는 젊은이로, 윤택한 중류계급의 양친에게 있어서는 귀여운 자식이다.어느날 여행을 떠난 부모가 갑자기 돌아왔고 대소동이 일어난다. 집에는 라나(Lana: 레베카 드 모네이 분)라고 하는 아름다운 창부가 있고 정학을 먹은 친구도 있다. 수습을 할 수 없는 죠엘은 경제적 필요를 쫓아서 갑부가 되어 이방면의 기업가로 변신하는데...
