Roman J.Israel,Esq.는 각본가 댄 길로이가 직접 시나리오도 쓰고 감독도 맡은 로만 이즈레일 변호사에 대한 영화이다. 이즈레일 변호사는 한 로펌회사에서만 평생을 일해 온 의욕적이고 성실한 범죄 변호인으로 법정세계에서는 보기드문 강직하고 신념 강한 인물이다. 하지만 파트너가 병원에 입원하면서 로펌회사는 문을 닫게 되고 지금과는 다른 길의 인생에 발을 딛게 되는 영화이다.
