어느 날 로스앤젤레스 해안에 나타난 거대한 우주선으로 인해 지구와 외계의 전쟁이 시작된다. 해병대에서 신병을 훈련하는 크리스는 전쟁으로 인해 가족을 잃고 좌절에 빠진다. 한편, 기적적으로 생존한 크리스의 동생 존은 복수를 위해 해병에 입대한다. 모든 희망을 잃은 채 점점 무너져가는 크리스와 자신 때문에 가족이 죽은 것 같아 괴로워하는 존. 마침내 형제는 판세를 뒤집을 마지막 작전을 앞두고 마주하게 되는데…
