도심에 북극광이 나타난 1999년 어느 날 밤. 존(잭 카비젤)은 아버지의 무선 라디오를 만지다 1969년에 살고 있는 아버지 프랭크(데니스 퀘이드)의 목소리를 듣는다. 존은 소방관이었던 프랭크가 화재 현장에서 사고로 죽기 전 미리 피할 수 있는 방법을 알리고 그의 죽음을 막는다. 다음 날 존은 잃었던 아버지를 되찾은 기쁨에 들뜨지만 자신이 3명만 살해하고 죽었어야 할 연쇄 살인범도 함께 살렸다는 사실을 깨닫는다.
