동부의 신사인 멕케이는 테릴 소령의 딸과 결혼하기 위해 서부에 도착하나 해너시가로 부터 괄시를 받는다. 테릴 소령가의 목동장인 리치도 멕케이를 경계한다. 멕케이는 이 땅을 사들여 양가의 분쟁을 해결하려고 계획한다. 그러나 해너시가와 테릴 소령가의 관계는 극도로 악화되어 전 목동들을 집결하고 싸움을 벌이려 한다. 그러자 해너시가 1대1 결투를 제안하고 둘 다 죽게 된다.
