로제타는 열심히 일을 했음에도 불구하고 계약만료라는 이유만으로 다니던 공장에서 해고당하고 직장을 구하기 위해 돌아다닌다. 그러나 번번히 취업에 실패하다가 운 좋게 와플가게에 취직을 하지만 그것도 3일만에 짤린다. 그녀의 어머니는 술을 먹기 위해 아무 남자에게나 몸을 파는 알콜 중독자 창녀이다. 로제타는 다른 사람들처럼 평범하게 살고 싶어하지만 평범한 삶이라는 것 자체가 힘든 그녀다.
