때는 1965년, 미국은 하버드 석사 출신의 할 무어 중령을 비롯해 젊은 군인 395명을 베트남 아이드랑 계곡 X레이 지역에 투입한다. 이들이 맞서 싸워야 할 적군은 무려 2000여명의 정규군. 험준한 정글 지형에서 벌어진 미국과 베트콩의 최초 전투에서 미국은 처참한 병력을 상실하며 가까스로 승전을 거둔다. 이 전투를 진두지휘했던 할 무어 중령과 죠 갤러웨이 종군기자는 미국 전쟁사에서 잊혀진 72시간을 <우리는 한때 군인이었다>는 논픽션으로 집필했고 93년 베스트셀러가 된 이 책을 읽은 렌달 월레스 감독이 영화화했다.
