미국의 배우 겸 작가 조나단 에임스가 쓴 동명소설을 원작으로 한 영화. 한때는 유능한 군인이었으나 베트남 전쟁에서 죽음의 문턱에 다다른 이후, 비밀리에 유력 인사들의 청탁을 받아 사람을 찾거나 누군가를 죽이는 일을 하고 있는 조(호아킨 피닉스). 그는 어느 날 상원의원의 딸 니나(예카트리나 삼소노프)를 찾아달라는 임무를 맡고 그녀를 구해내지만, 이 사건에 연루 된 거물들에 의해 니나와 함께 쫓기는 신세가 된다. 무자비한 폭력과 타락하고 부패한 권력 그리고 미완성의 존재들의 연대를 그린다.
