유기견 벤지는 학교에서 돌아오는 카터(가브리엘 베이트먼)를 만난다. 처음 보는 개에게 유달리 친절한 카터를 따라가는 벤지. 그렇게 카터와 벤지는 한 집에 함께 살게 되지만, 엄마(키엘 산체즈)는 개를 키우는 것을 반대한다. 결국 또 다시 거리로 내몰리는 벤지.

그러던 중 벤지는 카터와 동생 프랭키(다비 캠프)가 강도들에게 납치 당하는 것을 보고, 필사적으로 그들을 뒤쫓게 된다. 경찰(제로드 헤인즈)과 엄마는 벤지의 활약으로 강도들의 위치를 알아내는 데 성공하지만, 이미 모습을 감춘 강도들로 인해 벤치의 노력은 물거품으로 돌아간다.
