냉전 시기인 1958년. 메인주 작은 마을에서 어머니와 단 둘이 사는 소년 호거스(제니퍼 애니스턴)는 거대한 로봇을 발견한다. 호거스는 이 로봇을 아이언 자이언트라고 부르며 친구가 된다. 지능을 가진 로봇은 호거스와 지내면서 점차 인간적인 감정을 깨닫기 시작한다. 그러나 로봇에 관한 정보를 입수한 미국 정부 요원들이 공격해 오자 로봇은 본래의 용도를 드러내는데...
