장난꾸러기 꼬마소녀 바이올렛은 1차 세계대전이 한창인 1917년 미국 남부 뉴올리언즈의 공창 지대에서 창부인 엄마 헤티와 함께 살고 있다. 그러나 그녀가 12살 되는 생일 날, 첫 경험을 치룰 처녀로서 경매에 붙여지고, 거액을 제시한 한 중년 남자가 그녀를 자신의 침대로 데려간다. 몇 년 후 전쟁이 끝나고 공창 제도도 폐지되면서, 바이올렛은 아직 미성년이었지만 전부터 자신을 좋아하던 순수한 청년 벨록과 결혼한다. 그러나 엄마 헤티가 그들을 찾아와 바이올렛을 키우겠다며 데려가고 마는데...
