덴마크의 왕이 갑자기 서거하자, 동생 ‘클로디어스’가 왕위에 오르며 선왕의 아내와 재혼한다. 아버지의 죽음으로 인한 충격과 어머니를 향한 원망에 사로잡혀 괴로운 시간을 보내던 ‘햄릿’ 왕자는 아버지의 망령으로부터 자신이 동생에 의해 독살되었다는 얘기를 듣게 된다. 이에 ‘햄릿’은 광증으로 자신의 본 모습을 숨긴 채 왕과 왕비의 이야기를 담은 연극을 선보이지만, 진실을 찾아가는 과정에서 사랑하는 여인 ‘오필리어’와 그의 아버지인 ‘폴로니어스’를 위험에 빠뜨리고 만다.
