세계 2차대전 중 미군은 노르망디 상륙 작전에 성공한 후 북프랑스를 떠날 예정이다. 그러나 루이스 이등병이 적군을 쏘지 않고 머뭇거려 베켓 대위가 부상을 입게 되어 수술을 받게 된다. 수술중 독일군이 나타 군의관을 죽이고 나머지 미군을 전쟁 포로 잡는다. 포로 이송중 탈출하게된 루이스 일당은 독일군 디트리크 중위를 포로로 잡고 민간인으로 변장해 시내로 나가게 된다. 독일군은 루이스 일당을 쫓는다. 독일군은 탈출한 미군들의 시체와 탱크를 발견하게 되는데..전쟁의 결말은?
