전 세계를 돌아다니며 비즈니스에 열을 올리는 페덱스의 간부 척 놀랜드(톰 행크스)는 업무 차 여행을 하다 조난을 당한다. 척은 아무도 없는 무인도에서 4년을 보내고 극적으로 탈출에 성공한다. 하지만 바삐 돌아가는 세상은 생환한 척에게 낯설게만 보이고 사랑하는 여인 켈리(헬렌 헌트)도 이미 다른 남자와 결혼한 상태다. 척은 그렇게도 그리워하던 문명세계에서 또다시 고독에 빠진다.
