어느날, 물의 부족인 카타라와 소카 남매는 빙하속에 갇혀 있는 아바타인 공기의 유목민 출신 아앙을 구해주지만 곧 불의 제국 왕자인 주코에게 쫒기게 된다. 아바타의 운명을 가진 아앙은 카타라, 소카 남매와 함께 4가지 원소를 다루는 법을 배우기 위한 여정을 떠나게 되는데...
