포스터 보이＂는 진정한 가족의 일원이 되고 싶어하는 고아, 맥스의 이야기다.＂ 그의 꿈은 뵈지거 가족이 맥스를 입양하면서 이루어지는 듯했지만 뵈지거 가족은 맥스에게 사랑을 주는 대신 일꾼 취급을 하고, 양부모의 아들 제이콥은 맥스를 괴롭힌다. 그런 맥스에게 아코디언은 살아갈 용기를 주는 유일한 즐거움이다. 한편, 새로 부임한 교사가 맥스의 음악적 재능을 알아보고 그에게 동네 축제 때 연주할 수 있는 기회를 준다. 그러나 그의 행복은 오래가지 못하는데…
