1944년 10월 5일 전투에서 이지중대는 둑과 길의 교차로 근처에서 사전에 확인이 안 된 독일군 SS 2개 중대와 마주친다 독일군이 지리적으로나 수적으로 우세한 가운데 포위가 가능한 상황에서 윈터스 대위는 1개 소대를 이끌고 기습해 적을 격멸하고 포로를 사로잡는다 이 공로로 윈터스는 2대대 부대대장으로 보직을 옮기나 항상 이지중대를 생각한다
